“ROUTINE” CALL RESLULTS IN NEAR MISS

Station 26 and 56 responded to 500 Atrium Drive 4-story office building for the activated fire alarm. Car 26 Chief Vladyka and Engine 26-1 arrived and began an investigation of the alarm activation. During the investigation Engine 26-1s crew discovered water on the ceiling in a first floor hallway they also discovered a very hot door and an odor of electrical burning. Command ordered a 2nd alarm and Engine 56-1 stretched a handline to the hallway. Crews donned their masks charged the line and forced the door. Upon forcing the door the crew was met with a large amount of steam coming from what appeared to be an electrical room. With zero visability the crew scanned the room with the TIC and discovered numerous areas showing heat. The hose team proceeded into the room and began cautiously descending the stairs after descending several stairs the nozzleman experienced buring pain in his foot and the crew backed out of the room. After the steam had lifted it was discovered that there was approx. 5 feet of hot water in the room. The source of the water was found to be an open irrigation water valve in an outdoor valve pit and the water had somehow made its way back to the below grade electrical switch gear room. Fortunately the injured firefighter was checked out and is OK. Always expect the unexpected.
